17 AugAvoid the Comparison Trap

Comparing yourself–your life, your gifts and talents, your family, your accomplishments, your frailties or strengths–to anyone else will never net you anything worthwhile.  At its “best”, it will leave you with an inflated, overestimation of yourself that’s rooted in pride.  At worst, it will leave you deflated, discouraged and discontent with the wonderful life God has graced you to live.  In truth, there’s simply no up-side to comparing yourself to others.  Because whether you think you’re better or worse off than someone else, it’s always a risky proposition.  And it’s a trap from the enemy to steal your joy, kill your dreams and ultimately hinder and destroy your destiny (John 10:10).

To eliminate any doubt on the matter, the Scripture makes it clear that comparing ourselves among ourselves is unwise!

“…but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” –(2 Corinthians 10:12)

In other words, that’s no way to live!  It makes no sense to presume to measure yourself against another person any more than it makes sense for the eyeball to measure itself against the kneecap or any other body part.  The reason being is that God has created each body part with its own unique–and significant–ability and role in the overall function and well-being of the human body.   And equally so, we, as individual members of the Body of Christ, all have unique roles, abilities, talents, etc., that serve to make the Body of Christ what it can and should be in the earth.

So rather than esteeming your unique and special gift and place and grace, comparison lures you to discount and disdain the good work God has begun in you (Philippians 1:6).  And again, that will yield no profit.  It’s also like a slap in God’s face because the residual message is that “I don’t appreciate who and what you’ve graced me to be; it’s not enough.”

Therefore, begin to pay attention to those suggestions from the enemy to compare your life to another.  (They may be subtle and seem innocent enough, but they’re anything but.)  And when you recognize it, resist it and cast it down (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).  Refuse to fall into his trap and instead live content in the tailor-made life (with all its ups and downs) that God has ordained for you (Ephesians 2:10, AMP).

Thank God for the life He’s allowing you to live and esteem it as special, noteworthy–and beyond compare!

07 MayGiving Beyond

Have you ever been challenged with giving when it seemed as though you barely had enough for yourself?  Barely enough time.  Barely enough energy.  Barely enough money.  Barely enough encouragement.  Barely enough.  For sure, it’s those times–the times when it seems as though we can afford it the least–that our giving is most significant and impactful.  Giving outside of ourselves–outside of our comfort zone–is the true essence of giving beyond.

Even if you were hesitant to raise your hand in response to my last question, you’ll have to agree with me that it’s much easier–almost uneventful to some extent–to give when you have plenty.  Plenty of time to spare.  Plenty of energy.  Plenty of money in the bank or the wallet or both.  Plenty of encouragement and inner peace.  Plenty.  Am I right?  I am because that’s giving that anyone can do, without much effort or thought of consequence or inconvenience.  Because there’s plenty, there’s no stretch involved.  No potential sacrifice.  No going beyond.

But, in fact, if we’re only giving the limited, measured, comfortable, routine amounts, we’re not going far enough.  I’m not saying that every measure of giving will require giving beyond ourselves, but there should be a willingness of heart and generous spirit about us that keeps us ready to share and be liberal, as the Lord and others need us.

And the good news is that you can’t ever give without putting yourself in a position to receive an abundance of the same back in return (Mark 10:29, 30).  Proverbs 11 promises that even though you may be giving on every front–and feel like it’s more than you have to give–you will increase, not decrease!  (vv.24, 25.)  God will ensure that you are blessed and your life is enhanced and enriched, resulting in even more to give!  It’s a beautiful cycle that keeps on giving.

So stir up your heart to go beyond your current, normal level of giving and watch your giving have greater impact (and bring more fulfillment) than ever before.

25 FebRevelations of Love (Part 2)

This post is dedicated to further encouraging you in the love of God–God’s love for you, that is.  When you have a revelation of God’s deep, all-encompassing love, it will change everything.

Be encouraged through this prophecy received by Sister Grace Roos on November 29, 1966.  It’s a powerful revelation of love–and it’s still for us today.

Tell My People…

Tell My people that I love them.  That my love is not a love of judgment whereby I stand to condemn them at the first misstep: Rather, My love is a compassionate love that remembers they are of dust!  Have they stumbled? Have they fallen? Have they acted unwisely and independent of Me and My Spirit?  Still Remind Them: I love them with a heart overflowing with understanding and mercy.  And Will Instantly Restore Them if they will but turn to Me.

I am not difficult to serve!  I am not an austere, self-righteous One!  Nay: I long, I yearn after My own, and would have them know for a certainty there is forgiveness with Me!  There is a new beginning with Me!  There is love that plans for their eternal good…  Yea have they met a defeat?  Have they been overwhelmed?  Yea, I am Master of the situation, and am ready to take charge and right the wrong things, and bring blessing out of chaos!

Yea, tell them I am not a God with an upraised club, but I am the God of The Nail-Scarred Hand!  Has disobedience brought about a great miscarriage of My eternal plans for them?  Remind them that I am still Master of all, and if they will again turn to Me, I will do the impossible thing!  I will make defeat turn into victory… I will cause the bitter fruit of shame to bring them strength… And they shall again abound to My Glory!

18 FebRevelations of Love (Part 1)

God’s love for us is everlasting and unconditional.  His love is so great–and is so unlike human love often characterized by emotions and conditions.  Revelation of Love is a poem I wrote years ago, but it remains a testament to the life-giving love that we find in Christ.  And it’s the first of two revelations of God’s love that I want to extend to you.

Take it into your heart and rest in the knowledge that your Heavenly Father is eternally committed to you.  And, yes, He truly does LOVE YOU!

Revelation of Love

Beloved, beloved, Oh dear beloved—

that’s the precious name given to all

who’ve staked their claim in Jesus Christ,

the true Lover of our souls.

You ask, “How can I be sure of this love,

proclaimed the world throughout?” I

answer it comes with a simple trust and

REMEMBERING…

To remember His nail scarred hand; to

remember thorns piercing His brow; to

remember a sword severing His side; to

remember feet bound to a cross.

Oh, beloved, those memories indeed won’t

allow you to doubt the Love of Christ.  For

those memories are your heritage of proof

that His love for you knows no bounds.

For what greater love hath a man than this,

that He lay down His life for His friends?

There is no greater love, no greater love to

be found, so settle in to this love so profound.

Only a love from above, from on high, could

pave a trail through sin to you and I.

We have but one response in kind,

“Nothing will separate me from the love of Christ.”

31 DecThe Best Is Yet To Come

Saying goodbye to one year and preparing to embrace a New Year is always a time for pause, reflection, planning and, yes, dreaming, for the days ahead in my life.  There’s just something about new beginnings and fresh starts, represented in the start of a brand new year, that causes my expectations to soar.  Each new day, week, and month can (and should) invoke the same, but somehow a whole new year gets my attention like none other and rekindles every hope and dream within me, along with a commitment for improvement and personal growth in every area of my life.

I believe God designed it this way for exactly that reason.  Just think about it: He could have allowed time to exist without any punctuation or sense of starts, seasons or periods.  But, instead, in keeping with His gracious and merciful nature, He allows His creation the opportunity to begin–and begin again and again and again–laced with new motivations for living and being and doing and fulfilling His plans and purposes for our lives.

So with the start of this New Year, I’m so very thankful for all God has done in, through, and for me in the year gone by–and I’m even more expectant for brighter, greater and more blessed days ahead.  Not only for me, however, but for my family, friends, community, nation–and, of course, you.

In the coming year expect the best out of life, yourself and from the Lord.  And when it seems as though the best is the last thing coming your way, remember this: Jesus loves you and His grace is sufficient for you.  That’s all we’ll ever need to win in this life.

So here’s to a happy, healthy, prosperous and supremely blessed New Year–and to expecting (and receiving God’s best).

21 OctTwo Powerful Words

As words go, there’s no disputing their power.  Power to bless.  Power to curse.  Power to lift.  Power to deflate.  Power to change.  It’s all found in words; they are the spiritual containers that release everything.  If you’re reading this, you have experienced the power of words at some point and time, and I’d dare to say many times over.

Some words, however, are in a category all their own.  Two such words are: thank you.  That’s right.  Thank you.  Short and sweet–yet powerful and trans-formative–the phrase, “thank you”, is one of the most gracious things anyone can ever say or have said to them.  Why?  Because thanksgiving comes from a place of gratitude–a place of acknowledging something or someone for the value and blessing they’ve bestowed on you–often just because.  The opposite of thanksgiving happens, however, when we operate from a place of entitlement.  Then, instead of responding with gratitude and thanks, the temptation is to be nonchalant, ambivalent, or possibly even ungrateful.  And that’s a poor way to live.

To give thanks, and live a life of gratitude, we must train ourselves to take the focus off of us and place it onto those who come into our lives, whether for a moment, a season or a lifetime.  The cashier.  The barber.  The teacher.  The waitress.  Our loved ones.  Whomever they are, practice being more and more gracious to those God allows to cross your path–even to the point of offering thanks when it may not be warranted.  That’s true grace in motion.

If you’re tempted to think that I’m making much ado about nothing, then I want you to tell you this: thanksgiving means everything to God–and it can mean everything to you.  In fact, when you honor God–and others–through thanksgiving, it opens wide the funnel of blessing to overtake you, separate you from the common–and make you whole.

“And as he entered a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:  And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.  And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests.  And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.  And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?  There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.  And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.” Luke 17:12-19

In this account, we see clearly that thanksgiving matters to God–and to us.  Although God poured out his healing on all the lepers who sought him, only one–a Samaritan, a stranger to the covenants of Israel, one not normally entitled to the blessing of God–thought enough to thank God for His goodness and glory.  You would think that those lepers who were Jews would have been racing to thank the God of Israel for this awesome work, but could it be that a sense of entitlement got in the way?

God noticed that there was only one of the bunch that was grateful enough to give thanks.  And in the end, He blessed him more, leaving him not only cleansed–but whole (with nothing missing and nothing broken!)  And for a leper, this likely meant body parts being restored and more.  He was separated from the common lot of the nine and elevated to a higher level of well-being!

So final takeaway: don’t ever discount the power of words, especially these two powerful words: thank you.

08 AugEnjoy the Journey!

In life, we’re groomed to be goal-oriented and focused on the end results.  And while this serves the purpose of keeping us on the path to our ultimate destination–our destiny–there is something to be said for all the moments along the way.  There is indeed a lot to be said for…the journey.  Enjoying the journey, to be exact.

When you stop to reflect, how often have you rushed through an experience, a lesson, a challenge, or even a triumph, only to charge ahead to the “next big thing” without fully embracing what life was offering in that moment, in that season, along the path?  The old adage of not seeing the forest for the trees becomes reversed and imposes equal limitations where the details that make up our every day lives are diminished in view of the ever looming big picture.

Both the big picture and the individual scenes of life are to be in focus and embraced throughout our journey; one without the other will surely cause a distorted view and hinder the gift of living life to the fullest–each day.  Waiting for “someday” to be happy–or for the house or the promotion or the spouse or the breakthrough or whatever feeds your dreams and desires–is not the way to live!  Expecting in faith for God’s best, continually, with a keen eye on where He’s taking you is all-important.  But, relishing the small, seemingly insignificant, even routine, moments of today is how we should carry on.

During His time on earth, Jesus was such a great example of what it meant to enjoy the journey–without losing sight of, or letting go of, His ultimate purpose and mission.  He took the time to study, grow, worship, teach, love, laugh, pray, heal, bless, and so much more, while always keeping His focus and His eye towards His destiny in Jerusalem to become the Savior of the world.  And because He did it, we can also.

The Word promises that God has charted the path ahead of you and will even tell you where to stop and rest.  So follow His lead. Every day of your life was already planned and written in His book before even one day of your life began!  Think of that!  He knows all about you–from beginning to ending–and has placed His grace upon you to live out your purpose.

So continue to run the race set before you–and remember to enjoy the journey!

01 AprYears of a Life Worth Living

I recently celebrated another birthday (praise God!), and as birthdays and new beginnings, in general, can have a way of doing, it caused me to reflect on my life journey so far.  The defining moments, losses, abundant blessings, and the hopes and dreams that still remain for the days and years ahead, were all before me.

In the days following my birthday, a favorite scripture surfaced again and again in my heart and mind:

“My son, forget not my law or teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of a life [worth living] and tranquility [inward and outward and continuing through old age till death], these shall they add to you.” (Proverbs 3:1, 2 AMP)

As I meditated on this Word, I gratefully concluded that my life has indeed been (and will continue to be) a life worth living.  The greatest thing about my life journey to date has been the privilege to walk it out with the Lord, growing in Him as I’ve grown up in life, with its ebbs and flows.  Knowing God–through His Word and by His Spirit–has made ALL the difference in my truly living and enjoying life.

In fact, I recall a profound lesson that God taught me on this.  As I stood outdoors one Spring afternoon years ago, the Lord spoke to my heart.  He called my attention to the people that were going to and fro in the normal course of their daily affairs and then He said this: “Look at all those people who think they are living and they don’t even know Me.”  It was a profound realization that I’d never considered before that moment.

Essentially, God was calling my attention to the stark contrast of what it means to exist (“the walking dead”) versus what it means to truly live.  Existence–movement, action, activity, etc.,–is something that every human experiences while alive.  But living only comes as a result of knowing God.  Living a life that’s actually worth living is what God offers and wants for His people.  Not mere existence, but life in abundance, to the full, until it overflows! (John 10:10, AMP.)

I’ve never forgotten that lesson, and I’m grateful that God’s Word remains steadfast through the seasons of life, guaranteeing that my life will continue to be full, blessed and worth the journey.  I’m loving life–in Him–and I wouldn’t have it any other way. For whatever you desire to achieve, experience and become in life, always be mindful to stay rooted in God and His Word and allow Him to give you the life you dream of.  Without question, it’s the only one worth living.

30 JanConsider the Source

Have you ever heard or read something that someone said–perhaps something personally offensive or hurtful–only to brush it off without a second thought after you consider the source? Using a filter of sorts, you are able to classify what’s worthy of your attention and acknowledgement and, just as importantly, what isn’t.  In most matters, it really is all about the source.

And guess what?  God feels the same way.  In fact, He explicitly lays out the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of taking advice, choosing companions and generally going about the business of life.

“BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.”  ~Psalm 1:1, AMP

This straightforward direction from Scripture couldn’t be more needed today.  With all the twisting of truth to try and make it fit popular culture and ungodly standards, we have to give more attention than ever to weighing everything–our beliefs, our values, our decisions–through the filter of God’s Word.  And where what’s being presented doesn’t line up with God’s standard, then we should disregard it and recognize that it has no relevance to our personal lives.

Whether or not the world thinks something is acceptable or the hottest thing smoking should have no bearing on what we, as believers, determine as right and good and moral and clean and decent and honorable.  The two will hardly, if ever, coincide, so there must be a conscious judgement of what’s allowed to influence who we are and how we live.

There are many “voices” in the world and all of them are saying something to either sway us closer to God and His will for us or to drive us further away from His standard.  We have the Greater One living within us to lead and guide us into all truth (John 16; 1 John 4:4), so let’s be more mindful than ever to stay away from the garbage of the world and its ways and to cling to God’s Word and His truth.

Let’s filter everything through THE SOURCE of God’s Word and live out the blessed, happy, enviable lives that belong to us as His people!

31 DecGrateful, Grateful, Grateful

If I had to choose a theme song for my life in 2011, it would be “Grateful” by Hezekiah Walker.  Nothing else quite sums up the overflowing thankfulness and joy that I feel.  2011 has been a stellar year for me–and for many others I know–and it’s all because and only because of God’s faithful love and grace and mercy.

The Lord never ceases to amaze me.  I could wax on and on about the answered prayers, special favor, breakthroughs, protection, mercy and abounding goodness that is His signature on my life; evidence of His gracious hand that is upon me for blessing and against my adversary for judgment.  But, more than the outward manifestations, I’m most grateful because I KNOW the Lord loves me.  Not because I’ve earned it in any shape or form, because I could never do enough to deserve it, but because He IS GOOD, and He IS LOVE.

“…for God is love.  We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in His love” (1 John 4:8, 16, NLT).

Because the Scripture reveals God’s love for us again and again, we must choose to believe the love. That means in good times and not so good times.  Maybe you’re reading this now and facing some tough situations, dire outlooks or just recalling how 2011 has been a tough one on your end.  But the good news is that God’s love isn’t perceived based on your circumstances, but in spite of them!  Taking the focus off of your problems and putting it on God’s love, His promises to you and His faithfulness to be whatever you need Him to be is what will propel you forward.  After all, your circumstances are TEMPORARY, but God’s love is ETERNAL.

“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.  For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” (2 Corinthians 4:18, NLT).

As we close out 2011 and prepare to enter 2012, now is the perfect time to fix your gaze on the eternity of God’s love for you and towards you.  Thank Him for His goodness in your life so far and stir your heart to receive more of it in the year ahead.  Believe His love.

God’s best is still ahead…and I’m so grateful that I can walk it out hand-in-hand with Him, resting in His love.

Happy New Year!  May 2012 be your best year yet!
